City commences with Khayelitsha LED high-mast refurbishment project

The City’s Energy Directorate commenced with a light-emitting diode (LED) installation project on high-masts in Makhaza, Khayelitsha. The project forms part of the City’s R3,5 million investment focusing on retrofitting existing high mast lights with energy efficient LED lighting. The installation of the efficient and sustainable LEDs is an example of the City’s commitment to improved public lighting in all areas of the city. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy visited Makhaza where existing high-masts are being fitted with LED lamps.
The City is installing energy efficient LED fittings as part of its LED refurbishment public lighting project across the City.
The programme, which is being rolled out across the metro, is providing improved public lighting and has a range of benefits for the community where it is being installed.
'The project forms part of a R3,5 million investment focusing on retrofitting existing high mast lights with energy efficient LED lighting. We are pleased to be rolling out this project in Makhaza which will greatly enhance visibility and safety. Khayelitsha has a network of 222 high-mast lights and this long-term project will see the installation of LEDs to high-masts over the coming months and years.
'This installation of the LEDs to the high masts, including the maintenance of the infrastructure, requires careful planning and a 30 tonne crane truck for the work to be carried out. Our team of engineers and experts are working in areas across the metro and we continue to invest significantly into our public lighting and in the upgrading and maintenance of our critical infrastructure.
'Our City-wide project is making good progress in our communities, and we urge residents to help us protect our community lighting assets by reporting vandalism, theft and illegal connections to the authorities. Let's ACT and stand together to protect our power.
'Overall, the project will assist with improving the existing public lighting in the Khayelitsha area which will create a safer and more sustainable community for everyone. The City thanks the project teams for their work and the community for their support,' said Councillor Van Reenen.
The Khayelitsha high-mast LED lighting project aims to:
- Increase area visibility – improved public lighting will provide better visibility at night for all residents
- Reduce crime and enhance safety – enhanced visibility at night will act as a deterrent for criminals
- Improve economic benefits for the community – improved lighting can assist with boosting economic and entrepreneurial activity in the evening
- Install energy-efficient infrastructure in the community – LEDs are much more energy-efficient than traditional lighting
Report all suspicious activities at or near electricity infrastructure to the City's law enforcement agencies or the City's Fraud Hotline on 0800 1100 77 or to the SAPS. The SAPS remains the lead authority in crime prevention.
